Potato Cakes Friday by Dave Tamkus

By Dave Tamkus

Dave Tamkus, a long-time reader heralding from the Pork Pony days, bestows upon us his first-ever Unloosen submission. Like Katy's photo, Dave's transmission originates from the Pennsylvania Coal Region. Welcome to the other side of Unloosen, Dave. -Chris

The following sign has been up on Tioga St. [in Shamokin, PA] for about a week now. Personally, I won't be attending. I don't know how to plan my evening around "6-TiL." Something about the hand drawn letters tells me if you eat the caked potato being served "FRiDAY," you are going to have a long Saturday. Another interesting fact, the arrow isn't really pointing to a building. I would assume that you just have to show up and look for a line. Which actually reminds me of a joke. Q: What has 60 legs and 7 teeth? A: The potato cake line at Transfig block party.

Interesting use of light. Having the "FRiDAY 6-TiL" in shadow gives the whole thing a sinister air. For all you know, you'll be enjoying potato cakes for all eternity -- IN HELL!

Is the arrow possibly pointing to the back of the sign? My guess is that a lonley "10P" is on the flip side. "Hot Pants Saturday" has an arrow that points to "???!!!"

I think "Pennsylvania Coal Region" deserves it's own category at Unloosen. It totally transcends fiction, nonfiction, photos, reviews, etc.

"6-til" merely implies that the sign is advertising the next LP from R&B champion R. Kelly.

"Potato Cakes Friday (6-til)" is meant to be a smoothed-out-on-the-pop-tip soul epic that rounds out and re-imagines the series of LPs begun with 1993's "12 Play."

It's actually rather comforting to see that Shamokin still supports Mr. Kelly, despite all the, well, you know...

This will most likely happen in the next iteration of Unloosen, which is due before the end of the summer. I actually intended to overhaul the site in November, but then Thanksgiving happened, and then Christmas, and then National Pantyhose month, and, well, you get the picture. The new Unloosen will be host to a user forum, new sections, more user interaction (open posting to certain sections after registering) and an updated layout. All of the old stuff will remain intact and should move over seamlessly due to the fact that it's stored in a big ol' database. Yeehaw for technology!

Shamokin's like a giant jockstrap for the statutorily-inclined.

Wargo, I only could hope that a lone 10pm was on the other side of the sign. Fortunately for the unloosen view, the sign read exactly the same on the other side. I checked, just to make sure.
